Nene K270 - Reunion 1989

Ottawa 1989 (Third Reunion)

The Ottawa reunion was held at the Radisson Hotel in downtown Ottawa. It was late June 1989 and the weather was extremely warm, so warm in fact that the elevators weren't working properly. Mary Forsythe had the distinction of getting herself caught on one of the elevators for some time. Many events took place including a trip down the Ottawa river. A visit was arranged to the Russian embassy and crew members and wives and friends were greeted by the Russian Ambassador, Alexei Rodionov. The Ambassador presented Captain Shaw with a medal for the ship's support of convoys to North Russia. Captain Shaw said,

"We were companions in arms. It strengthens the growing friendship between our two countries that only weakens when your hockey team beats ours".

We were joined at this meeting by Chris Tye, from Great Britain, Secretary of the North Russia Club. Many of our members qualified for membership in the North Russia Club, by virtue of their service aboard the NENE. A most moving event was the parade at the cenotaph and the laying of a wreath on Sunday morning.
