NOTE: The father of Alberto Gonzalvez was one of the refugees on board the French Passenger Ship SS Cuba at this time (December-January 1940). Alberto, who lives in Alicante, Spain, began to research his family from the time his father moved to the Dominican Repubic in 1940, until now.
The French troop ship, SS Cuba (the same ship), was torpedoed by U1195 as it steamed for the harbour in Portsmouth, England, on the morning of April 6, 1945. This event is recorded at::

A bordo del lujoso trasatlántico francés-Cañones de 90 mm para la defensa del buque-Lo que nos dijo el Comisario del barco-Personas de significación que vienen entre los refugiados-La actividad de nuestras autoridades para el desembarque de los pasajeros-Otros detalles de la nueva expedición que llega, al amparo de la hospitalidad comunitaria.
On board the luxurious transatlantic France's-Cannons of 90 mm for the defense of the ship-The that the (The one who is known as the) Commissioner of Barco-Personas (Ship’s Personel) of meaning (who came with the refugees) said to us which (told us other) details of the new expedition (come between sheltered- probably should mean “that happened”), under the protection of our community’s hospitality.
Esta mañana en las primeras horas arribó a nuestro puerto, el trasatlántico francés “CUBA”, conduciendo 547 pasajeros, de los cuales 520 son refugiados y 27 de tránsito, entre éstos distinguidas personalidades.

This ship has (is) 150 mts. (metres) of length and 30 of wide (width), moving 14.000 (fourteen thousand) tons. With a speed of 19 knots per hour and capacity for 1.500 (one thousand five hundred) passengers.
Nos dispusimos a subir al vapor “Cuba” y una vez allí tuvimos el honor de conocer al capitán Blanque Louis, hombre de mediana estatura, de ojos expresivos, espaldas anchas , como de 50 años de edad , quien nos recibió con la peculiar atención que caracteriza a los hijos de Francia.

Nos entrevistamos con el comisario del vapor después de cambiar saludos, respondiendo a algunas preguntas nos dijo que el capitán Blanque Louis es un viejo lobo de mar y que tiene piloteando la nave “Cuba” 25 años en la cuál tiene bajo sus órdenes una tripulación de 230 hombres, incluyendo la oficialidad.
Our interview with the commissioner of the steam (prbably the Chief Engineer) after changing greetings, responding to some questions. He said to us that captain Blanque Louis is an old wolf of sea and that he has (been) piloting the ship "Cuba" (for) 25 years, in which he has under its orders a crew of 230 men, including the officer corps.

He said to us in addition, that during the trip in some occasions they were escorted by French and English destroyers and that leaving France they were convoyed. The passage was wonderful, they only found temperature variations very abrupt but it was not necessary to lament (regret) no (any) class (types) of incidents, it is not the natural impression that it causes, traveling in a winter weather and to feel a suffocating heat suddenly.

De ese grupito, verdadero bouquet de rosas vivientes, por disposición del caballero militar Don J. Arismendy Trujillo Molina, M.M., se tomaron fotografias a fin de exhibirlas en algunos de los mas vistosos edificios de ‘esta ciudad.
Of that small group, a true bouquet of living roses, by disposition of the military nobleman Don J. Arismendy Trujillo Molina, M.M., they took photograghs in order to exhibit them in some of the attractive buildings of this city.

Entre los numerosos pasageros que conduce el vapor “Cuba” para éste puerto, figura el Sr. Lic. En ciencias, Don Esteban Cabeza Morente, quien fue el constructor del famoso puente del ferrocarril de Cuenca a Utiel, uno de los mas grandes de España; el nos manifestó su satisfacción al pisar tierra dominicana porque le parece sentirse en su amada España, a la vez que por la gran diferencia de estabilidad entre Francia, donde fueron atendidos en campos de concentración y la Rep. Dominicana que hoy le abre sus puertas para recibirles , devolviéndoles la libertad, que es el tesoro mas preciado por un hombre.
Amongst the numerous passengers that this steam(ship) "Cuba" carries for this one port, it appears Mr. Lic. in sciences, Don Esteban Morente Head, who was the constructor of the famous deck of the railroad from River basin to Utiel, one of but the great ones of Spain; Dominican earth showed its satisfaction to us when being above because it seems to him to feel in his loved Spain, simultaneously that by the great difference of stability between France, where they were taken care of in concentration camps and the Rep. Dominican that today opens its doors to receive us, giving back the freedom, that is the treasure prized by a man.
Viene también el Magistrado Don Aurelio Matilla, el Dr. Roig, hombre de significación, toda vez que fue Sub-Secretario de Medicina en España, Don Aurelio Matilla hijo, jefe de Estado Mayor de los ejércitos catalanes, Ramón Martorell, comandante principal de ingeniería del ejército del este; el frívolo y afamado poeta Montiel, tres arquitectos y dos ingenieros industriales cuyos nombres no nos fue dable adquirir.

Also the famous journalist, (came to these earth – who is wine of this earth), poet and artist Don Enrique Lopez de Alarcón, author of famous poems, amongst which we remembered the sonnet: "I am Spanish", that was very praised in all the Américas; the famous " José Libio" (famous Spanish bullfigther), the comedian "The Tizona", who was applauded very much in all the arenas where he presented/displayed.
El nos manifestó que en varias ocasiones tuvo la idea de visitar nuestro país; pero que nunca le fue posible, sin embargo ”hoy he podido realizar ese gran deseo y en ocasión tan noble como la de la disposición de su gobierno de recibirnos, para devolvernos la libertad que por tanto tiempo habíamos perdido; hoy siento dentro de mí algo que no puedo expresar, algo así lo que pueda sentir todo ser que tienta extraviado vagando por el mundo y por fin llega a un sitio donde encuentra sus hermanos, sí, hermanos, porque la sangre es la misma mía; la misma de aquellos que quemaron sus naves para no volver atrás, si, la misma de aquellos que trazaron líneas en la arena señalando el Sur para emprender las gloriosas conquistas, gracias a las cuales hoy me siento en mi casa”.
He showed to us that in several occasions he had the idea to visit our country; but that never was possible to him, nevertheless "today I have been able to make that great desire and in as noble occasion as the one of the disposition of its government to receive to us, in order to give back the freedom to us that thereforetime (for a time) we had lost; today I feel within me something that I cannot express, something thus what can feel all being whom it touches misled (and are looking for) vagando (idled, wandering) by the world (people of the world) and finally it arrives at a site where it finds its brothers, yes, brothers, because the blood is same (as) mine; the same (one of that they-people that) burned their ships not to return back, yes, the same (one of that they – people that) drew up to (those) lines in the sand indicating the South to undertake the glorious conquests, thanks to which today I feel in my house (at home)".
Haciendo un recuento de su vida, nos dijo que el día 2 de Enero, cuando la gran tragedia, salió de Barcelona, y el día 2 de Febrero entró a Francia y después de sufrir muchísimas calamidades hoy procede de Burdeos, llega a la hospitalaria ciudad de los Colones.
“Yo soy un hombre mayor ya, pero me siento satisfecho porque la intuición de América es inmejorable para los españoles y yo estoy dispuesto, a volver con nuestros hermanos de América al final de nuestra vida, que por cierto al ser en esta Ciudad Trujillo , creo poder cerrar con broche de oro, la eclosión de energías y actividades en que se ha sumido mi vida”.

En todos los puentes del aludido trasatlántico, se encontraba la Dirección de Turismo, suministrando folletos y datos de propaganda a todos los pasajeros de tránsito que permanecerán un día en esta ciudad.

Por indicaciones que nos diera el teniente coronel del Ejército Español, Don Rodolfo Boch Pearson, Secretario General de la Junta Pro-Inmigración Española, estamos en disposición de informar que de los refugiados españoles que últimamente llegaron a bordo del “Cuba”, han sido despachados para San Pedro de Macorís 70 y para La Vega 204.
