Joseph C. Hoey - Able Seaman
Joseph Hoey was born in 1924. He was educated in the Campbellford, Ontario area and then Peterborough. He worked after school and joined the navy at Kingston, Ontario. Joe was drafted to HMCS Cornwallis, the St. Francis and returned to Cornwallis. He then went to the Torpedo School at HMCS Stadacona and was drafted to the Nene. Following his discharge Joe applied for training at the VLA Trade School and was accepted for bricklaying and was employed as an apprentice by Pigott Construction. During this period Joe also took three years of night school in drafting and blue print reading. In 1948 he married a red headed Irish girl, Helen Crough. Joe and Helen have three children, Christopher, Grant and Judy, all married and two daughters-in-law Debbie and Kim, and son-in-law Wally Harrison. Chris and Debbie have provided the Hoey's with two grandchildren Terry and Scott. In 1951 Joe formed a company, Hoey Specialties, and did masonry work. In 1952 they built their own home where they now reside. In 1962 Joe and Helen formed a company called Overhead Doors and carried on business until 1977. In 1978 they formed another company Peterborough Doors Ltd. Joe belongs to several business organizations and the Peterborough Chamber of Commerce. He has belonged to the Lakefield Lions Club for 25 years and the Lakefield Legion. He fishes and hunts and keeps a flock of racing pigeons and also keeps bees.
